Otsego Land Trust Announces Tree Champions
Otsego Land Trust is pleased to announce the final results of the 2010 Champion Tree Search just in time for Arbor Day. 61 trees that included 24 native and naturalized species were nominated by 29 groups and individuals.
The largest Sugar maple (Acer saccharum), submitted by Katherine Ray of Unadilla, is located on Main Street (Route 7) in the Village of Unadilla. Connie Schwarting reported the largest Red oak (Quercus rubra), found in Neahwa Park in Oneonta. Joe Richardson of Morris reported the most Champion trees (7), located at the Oneonta Greenway and in the Town of Morris. Bob Sutherland of Mohican Farms contributed 4 Champions in the Town of Springfield. Nine towns in Otsego County claim champion trees, with Oneonta and Springfield the towns best represented with 6 and 5 species respectively.
Winning trees were determined according to the measurement guidelines used in the New York Big Tree Register. This includes a measurement of the circumference at 4’ 6” from the ground, along with height and crown measurements. Contributors of the largest trees will receive certificates and/or tree field guides. A list of the 2010 Champion Trees can be found on the Otsego Land Trust website www.otsegolandtrust.org.
The Champion Tree Search for the Otsego Region will continue in 2011. Starting in 2011, all trees, including non-native landscape trees, may be submitted. If you think you have a Champion tree, submit an entry. Youth and youth organizations are encouraged to participate. Please check out the website for instructions and forms.
